Honoring Black Heritage & Unity

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a cherished federal holiday that honors the progress made toward equality, justice, and inclusion. The Black Heritage Society Inc., which organized the Original MLK Jr. Day Parade in 1978, is excited to announce the Pre-Jubilee Celebration. We will host the MLK Parade for the 50th time in January 2028!

Since 1974, over 50 years, we have been the bridge between history and hope, preserving Black heritage, promoting peace and nonviolence, and creating a stronger Houston for generations to come. The late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: "I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action."  Dr. King emphasized the importance of unity in the struggle for justice, freedom, and equality. 

In honor of the late Ovide Duncell Jr., Black Heritage Society Inc. is leading the MLK Unity parade and embracing the necessary sacrifices as we advance into the next chapter of our journey. Registration will be available soon. Gratitude and pride radiated from the corner of downtown Houston as people of all ethnicities came together to honor our champion leader, the late Dr. Martin L. King, a symbol of inclusion, justice, equality, and freedom for all. An estimated 100,000 or more attendees witnessed this historic event in person and on media platforms. Each participating parade proudly presented its own Grand Marshal and distinctive entries, along with the City of Houston. Each year, the Society honors a leader who sparks change, inspires others, and makes a lasting impact on the community.  As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we reaffirm our commitment to justice, inclusion, freedom, and opportunity, carrying forward Dr. King’s enduring legacy.
