Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a cherished federal holiday that honors the progress made toward equality, justice, and inclusion. The Black Heritage Society Inc., which organizes the Original MLK Jr. Day Parade, is excited to announce the unification of the Original MLK Jr. Parade and the MLK Grande Parade into a single event called the MLK Unity Parade. Previous attempts to merge the two parades were unsuccessful, but this year has brought about a positive change with the City of Houston Mayor John Whitmire. In recognition of the divisive climate, a plan for unification was successfully negotiated. Teresa Brewer, the president of the Black Heritage Society, acknowledged the complicated history between the late founder, Ovide Duncantell Jr., and a former employee, which resulted in a judgment against Mr. Charlie Stamps.
However, we feel this moment is significant as we navigate a world that often lacks sacrificial love, meaningful conversations, truth-telling, and healing. While African Americans have consistently shown their capacity for sacrifice, it is also crucial to celebrate our uniqueness and promote solidarity as we embody sacrificial love. Please join the Original MLK Jr as we lead the celebration. This year's theme reflects that life can present itself with challenges, a world filled with justice, compassion, freedom, and unity creates an atmosphere of hope.
We are honored to have the upcoming MLK Unity Parade in Downtown Houston on January 19, 2026. Please mark your calendars!
