The BHS Children's Storytime program promotes diversity literacy, peace, positive leadership, civic engagement, and empowerment through a variety of engaging activities for all children and youth. Activities include poetry, short stories, art, cultural experiences, history lessons, sewing, speaking, film screenings, and crafts.
Our signature coloring book, *The Color of History*, invites participants ages up to 13 years old to learn about the life, legacy, and times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., explore works by African American authors, and create their own poems and stories inspired by what they’ve discovered. The program wraps up with a focus on activism in honor of founder and executive Ovide Duncantell Jr., highlighting the importance of voting and sharing the story of the first MLK Jr. Parade and street naming he organized in 1978. Youth and Teens 13-18 years old will work with *The Color of Peace* Coloring and activity Book, featuring artwork of Civil Rights leaders, while building skills in leadership, communication, public speaking, civic engagement, community service, nonviolence, peace, and more. Local artists, authors, community heroes, and speakers are bound to get those creative juices flowing to the next level while working with our youth at these events. Sessions will be held on Fridays from 2 PM to 7 PM by appointment at our facility for individuals. To enroll your child, please use the link below. Sessions will begin in September. The awards ceremony will take place during the MLK Weekend Holiday Event in January 2027; details will be announced soon.

We believe that introducing democratic principles early helps children better understand themselves and their communities. Meetings are held monthly at the community center and in the office, and the public is welcome to join. Our BHS C.O.P.E. is sure to keep youth engaged each session. Some curricula have 12 sessions. At the end of the sessions, children and Youth will showcase creative work alongside services and leadership achievements. To sign up, please call to schedule an appointment to visit our center. Dr. King once said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not judge the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” The Black Heritage Society Inc. believes this message reflects one of America’s core values, embracing equality for all. No matter the background—Black, White, Latino, Asian, Native, or newcomer—we want children to gain a historical perspective that inspires them to explore their identities and realize their potential.
This program is open to the public and ideal for family reunions, youth events, church gatherings, businesses, and groups. An evaluation tool will be used to gather feedback after the event. Children absorb knowledge like sponges, and by making this program interactive and meaningful, it aims to have a lifelong impact. Our programs can be tailored to your needs for 3, 6, 9, or 12 months. We work with local artists, leaders, professionals, and individuals who want to make positive impacts in our community.
Teens-- Young Adults Pulse Magazine
Pulse isn’t just a magazine; it’s a movement to amplify the voices of today’s youth. We believe this generation of teens is the most informed, creative, and capable in history. Our platform highlights their innovations, style, and activism, giving them space to dive into technology like podcasts, explore social justice, and express themselves freely. We’re dedicated to creating a place where ideas are valued, and potential is celebrated without limits.
The BHS Children's Storytime program also offers STEM learning, financial health training for youth, and journalism. By introducing STEM learning at an early age, children develop methods for examining problems and devising innovative solutions. This type of education enhances critical thinking skills and empowers them to ask questions. We believe it is essential for youth to understand basic concepts and how to navigate the worlds of economics and communication. The Black Heritage Society collaborates with banking to facilitate training sessions for young people, with Dr. Sabrina Lewis Jones, President of Exclusive Business Resolutions LLC, speaking to them about money management.
