Kids Heritage Reading Program

Read & Celebrate Black Heritage for Kids

The BHS Children's Storytime program offers a variety of fun and engaging activities for kids (6-13) and youth (14-16), including poetry, short stories, art, cultural activities, history, sewing, film screenings, and crafts. Kids will learn about the life, legacy, and times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the works of other African American authors, and have opportunities to create their own poems and stories inspired by what they’ve learned. The Black Heritage Society Inc. has gathered a collection of books by Black authors and historical works that were once banned from schools and libraries, and we’re expanding our space to house them. The program’s goal is to inspire young people to develop self-love, compassion for others, an appreciation for history, and a commitment to excellence. It also emphasizes the value of voting, believing that introducing democratic principles early helps kids better understand themselves and how their communities are governed. Sessions are held on a monthly Friday or Saturday.

Dr. King once said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not judge the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” The Black Heritage Society Inc. believes this message reflects one of America’s core values, embracing equality for all. No matter the background—Black, White, Latino, Asian, Native, or newcomer—we want children to gain a historical perspective that inspires them to explore their identities and realize their potential.

This program offers a valuable opportunity for families in the Houston area during spring break, on Saturdays, and in the summer. Situated in an underserved community, it provides convenient access for residents. Each child receives a BHS Book, featuring content about Martin Luther King Jr. and voting. Activities include reviewing the coloring book, solving puzzles, reading pages, discussing Dr. King, the Voting and Civil Rights Act, drawing, learning about the three branches of government,  and being introduce to the late founder Ovide Duncantell Jr.  Each child receives a coloring book to take home to share what they have learned. This program is ideal for family reunions, youth events, and church gatherings. An evaluation tool will be used to follow up after the event. Children absorb knowledge like sponges, and by making this program interactive and meaningful, it aims to have a lifelong impact. To participate in the BHS Children’s Store-time, don't hesitate to get in touch with 281-405-0006 to schedule a session.

We welcome junior and high school students to volunteer and facilitate workshops in exchange for community service or volunteer hours. Youth/Adult Facilitators must attend our 1-hour training session and read one of our selected books before presenting. ** They could get up to 8 volunteer hours with this program-- (Youth ages 14-16 to facilitate the session)

Black Heritage Youth Programs

Youth STEM & Heritage Education

The BHS Children's Storytime program also offers STEM learning, financial health training for youth, and journalism. By introducing STEM learning at an early age, children develop methods for examining problems and devising innovative solutions. This type of education enhances critical thinking skills and empowers them to ask questions. We believe it is essential for youth to understand basic concepts and how to navigate the worlds of economics and communication. The Black Heritage Society collaborates with banking to facilitate training sessions for young people, with Dr. Sabrina Lewis Jones, President of Exclusive Business Resolutions LLC, speaking to them about money management.

Empowering Young Minds with Math and Stories on Fun Day! Black Heritage Society proudly joins forces with Education 4 the People, a mathematical game for kids in 4th grade and up to play, earn money, and learn by teaching, coaching, and organizing. The excitement of hearing Children’s Storetime Reading, hands-on art, films, and pillowmaking culminated in the Relay Race.  We offer it once a month.

Science journalism empowers students to use their voice, engage with people outside their school walls, discover new ideas, and tell important stories. We use StoryMaker tools: lesson plans, projects, explainers, and other resources proven to increase critical thinking, curiosity, and civic engagement. More coming soon.
