58th Anniversary of MLK Jr. Assassination Candlelight Vigil

Candlelight Vigil and H-Town Car Sho

On behalf of the Black Heritage Society, Inc., we are honored to invite you to our 58th Annual MLK Jr Assassination Candlelight Vigil & Festival, taking place on Saturday, April 4, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the MLK Plaza, MacGregor Park in Houston, Texas.  Join us and hear the sounds of Africa with drumming by Tropic Blue Music. It is free and open to the public to attend.

The MLK Jr. Plaza, located within the park, is one of the few dedicated spaces in the nation that stands as both a treasured community landmark and a must-see tourist destination. This plaza honors Dr. King’s lasting contributions to peace, justice, equality, human dignity, and education. It serves as a testament to the ideals he fought for. As we reflect on his enduring impact, the event will culminate with a candlelighting ceremony, a powerful moment of unity and remembrance for all who attend. Program from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. This year’s theme is: "Build connections and pathways toward unity while safeguarding Dr. King's Legacy and Dream in a challenging and hostile environment.” As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us, “Let’s build bridges, not walls.” In a time marked by division and the erasure of history, we stand committed to telling the stories of our past, honoring our present, and inspiring future generations. This year also carries special meaning as we reflect on the legacy of the late Rev. Jesse L. Jackson and other civil rights leaders who advanced Dr. King’s vision of justice, equality, and freedom.

58th Anniversary of MLK Jr.'s Assassination Candlelight Vigil & Festival will feature:

• ROTC Showcase
• Tribute to Dr. King and Civil Rights Leaders
• Community storytelling at the MLK Statue
• Youth and Band Director Recognition Ceremony
• Advocacy and Civic Engagement Awareness
• A Unifying Candlelight Vigil Ceremony

Everyone’s welcome to join the event, and we’d love to see you there. If standing for a long time is tough, feel free to bring a chair or blanket to stay comfortable. Kids are invited too, with gifts available for them while supplies last. At the end, you’ll get a battery-operated candle to light up the celebration.

General Admission and Open to Public
