On May 24, 2014, over 3,000 people gathered in Houston, Texas, at MacGregor Park on MLK Boulevard and Old Spanish Trail for the unveiling of the MLK Statue as part of the Memorial Project. Attorney Ben Hall and his wife donated $60,000 to secure the statue’s placement at MacGregor Park for the Black Heritage Society Inc. Among those present at the ceremony were Derek King, Reverend Joseph Lowery, and Congressman John Lewis. For more than 30 years, Black Heritage Inc. worked toward its goal of honoring Martin Luther King Jr. with an eight-foot-tall bronze figure clad in a clergy robe, and the organization’s director, Ovide Duncantell Jr., remarked that the Tree of Life stood as a sentinel.
