The Storytime program provides a wide range of engaging activities, including poetry, short stories, writing, arts, history, sewing, and crafts for children and youth. Participants will delve into the life, legacy, and era of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other African American authors, with opportunities to create their poetry and short stories inspired by their learning. The program aims to help young people gain a deeper understanding of self-love, love for others, history, and a passionate drive for excellence. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of voting, advocating that introducing democratic principles to children at an early age fosters their understanding of themselves and. Our Climate Justice initiative seeks to raise awareness about justice and injustice while encouraging collaborative problem-solving through history, voting, cultural uniqueness, information, and petitions.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." The Black Heritage Society Inc. believes that Dr. King’s message embodies one of America's fundamental values, echoing the principles of equality. Regardless of background—whether Black, White, Latino, Asian, Native, or newcomer—we want our children to gain a historical perspective that encourages them to explore their identities and understand their potential.
This program offers a valuable opportunity for families in the Houston area. Situated in an underserved community, it provides convenient access for residents. A team of volunteers visits the facility when there are 15 or more children present. The program organizes three to four activity stations for the youth to rotate through. Each child receives a BHS Book, featuring content about Martin Luther King Jr. and voting. Activities include reviewing the coloring book, solving puzzles, reading pages, discussing Dr. King, the Voting and Civil Rights Act, drawing, learning about the three branches of government, signing petitions on social issues, and being introduced to the late founder Ovide Duncantell Jr. Prizes are distributed, along with a set of coloring supplies. Each child takes their coloring book home to share what they have learned. This program is ideal for family reunions, youth events, and church gatherings. An evaluation tool will be used to follow up after the completion of the event. Children absorb knowledge like sponges, and by making this program interactive and meaningful, it aims to have a lifelong impact.
We welcome junior and high school students to volunteer and facilitate workshops in exchange for community service or volunteer hours. Youth/Adult Facilitators must attend our 1-hour training session and read one of our selected books before presenting. ** They could get up to 8 volunteer hours with this program--we have some of the Black Authors' books that were banned from the public library. (Youth ages 12-16 to facilitate the session)
Kids will become familiar with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They will learn about his accomplishments.
