Overview of our services:
Our mission is to inspire, teach, and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the weekend of the federal holiday occurring on the third Monday of January with a commemorative parade and celebratory festive community activities throughout the weekend and other yearly activities. Our Programs target the low-income, misrepresented, disenfranchised and marginalized residents of Houston, Harris County. These programs provide knowledge of the challenges that Dr. MLK Jr and Black communities faced daily. They provide pathways to leadership, economic empowerment, financial views, a sense of pride, growth, and commitment to change for the betterment. As stated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Orginial MLK Jr Parade
On January 18, 2021, the Houston Black Heritage Society will celebrate its 43rd Annual “Original” MLK Day Parade and Holiday Celebration. The “Original” MLK, Jr. Parade was commissioned at the behest of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s own father, known by many as Martin Luther “Daddy” King, Sr January 21st, 1978.
Not only did his father commission the organization to conduct the very first MLK Day Parade in the nation, but Dr. King’s father also served as our parade’s first-ever grand marshal.
Due to COVID-19 and our commitment to prioritizing our fellow citizens' health and safety in the community, the City of Houston and the Black Heritage Society’s 2021 Annual “Original” MLK Day Parade will broadcast live virtual platforms for this year.
